Fall 2017
Hi, here is some information about my course Discrete Mathematics (CRN: 20264, MAD 2104, 3 credits). We meet Mondays and Wednesdays7:10-8:30 p.m.7:10-8:40 p.m. in SC 178. (To make up for missed class time due to Hurricane Irma, we meet for 10 extra minutes each time.)
Prerequisite
Calculus I.
Textbook and Topics
Biggs, "Discrete Mathematics", second edition, Oxford UP, paperback, ISBN-10: 0-19-850717-8, ISBN-13: 9780198713692.
- Foundations (Sections 1, 2, 3): Mathematical statements and proofs; sets and operations on sets; logic including quantifiers (3 weeks)
- Counting (Sections 4, 5, 6): Natural numbers, functions, the Pigeonhole Principle (3 weeks)
- Number systems (Sections 7, 8, 9): Integers, rational numbers and real numbers (3 weeks)
- Counting revisited (Sections 10, 12, 14): Euler function, permutations, algorithms (3 weeks)
- Algebraic methods (Sections 13, 20, 21, as time permits): Modular arithmetic, groups, permutation groups (3 weeks).
Goals
- Determine the logical structure of mathematical statements,
- express mathematical ideas precisely,
- explain why a mathematical statement is true or why it is not valid,
- recognize and utilize relations and bijections,
- understand the constructions of the integers, the rational numbers and the reals,
- apply mathematical induction to verify mathematical statements,
- use counting methods, in particular the pigeonhole principle,
- determine the running time of algorithms.

Credit Homework: I will assign homework problems every week. Here is the link. (Please bookmark this page.) The problems will not be graded, but some may show up on a quiz.
Quizzes: We will have a quiz every Wednesday; the
twelveten best quizzes count for 60 % of the grade. Quiz 12 will take place on November 27. No calculators can be used during the quiz.Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will count for 40 % of your grade. It is scheduled for Sunday, December 10, 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in SO 250. Please bring a picture id (Owl card or drivers licence)!
